Utah unclaimed money and property: is it yours?

Where to search Utah's official unclaimed property list for free, what happens to forgotten safe-deposit boxes there, and whether the money is still yours after a sale.

Safe-deposit boxes

Does Utah auction unclaimed safe-deposit-box contents?

It can, but we haven't confirmed a dated state sale in 2025–26. Utah's official unclaimed property site has an Auctions page. When we checked, it said "Coming Soon" and listed no sales.

Not yet verified: We found no dated Utah sale.

After a sale

If the box was already sold, can I still claim the money?

The Utah pages we read don't say what happens to the money after a sale. Ask Utah State Treasurer directly; its contact details are on the official site ↗.

How to check

How do I check Utah for free?

  1. Open Utah's official search: mycash.utah.gov ↗. Check that the address is this one before you type anything in.
  2. Search your name, any past or maiden names, and any business you ran. If a relative has died, search their name too: heirs can often claim. Ask the state office what proof it needs.
  3. If you've lived or worked in other states, search those too. MissingMoney.com ↗, NAUPA's free site, searches most states at once and links back to each state's official claim page.
  4. File the claim on the official site and send the proof it asks for, such as ID. Each state sets its own rules.

Finders

Do I need to pay someone to claim it?

No. NAUPA, the national association of state unclaimed property administrators, says there's no fee to search for and claim your property if you use your state's official program. Paid finders are legal in most cases but never required. Some states cap their fees and many require them to register, so check with the state office before you sign a finder's contract. NAUPA ↗
