How often
About once a year (per our state survey).

State law requires Revenue to auction safe-deposit-box contents if the owner hasn't claimed them within five years of the state receiving them. The state doesn't profit: cash proceeds, minus auction and bank fees, are held in the owner's name.

Check whether an item is yours first

If you or a relative had a safe-deposit box in Washington, search Washington's official unclaimed property search ↗ before the sale. Claims are free, and you don't need to pay a finder. MissingMoney.com ↗ searches many states at once.

If an item has already been sold, the proceeds are usually held for the owner; check the state office above for its rules. How claiming works.
