Work out what a coin, bar or piece of scrap is worth in metal. Pick a coin or enter the weight and purity, and the calculator prices it at current spot.

Melt is the metal only. It ignores collector (numismatic) value, which can be far higher for scarce dates, high grades or certified coins. It's also not what you'll be paid: dealers usually buy below melt to cover refining and their margin, and sell above it. Use melt as a floor-of-metal reference, not a price.

How it works
Melt = weight × purity × spot. Weight and purity give the fine metal content in troy ounces; spot is the market price per troy ounce. A 1927 Saint-Gaudens $20 weighs 33.436 g at .900 fine, so it holds 30.09 g, or 0.9675 troy oz, of gold.
We also use melt math on real lots in state unclaimed-property sales: see the Pennsylvania Oct 28 picks. More on how we estimate melt.
FAQ
The value of the precious metal in a coin at the current spot price: fine metal weight in troy ounces times the spot price per troy ounce. It ignores any collector value.
Precious metals are priced in troy ounces. One troy ounce is 31.1035 grams; a regular (avoirdupois) ounce is 28.35 grams. A pennyweight (dwt), common in jewelry, is 1/20 of a troy ounce, or 1.555 grams.
Divide the karat by 24. 24k is pure (.999+), 22k is .9167, 18k is .750, 14k is .583 (often stamped 585) and 10k is .417. Enter the decimal in the purity box.
From gold-api.com. Each page shows the time the price was taken, and the calculator loads the latest price when you open it. Spot moves constantly, so treat every figure as an estimate.
Turning coins into usable metal costs money (assaying, refining, shipping) and dealers need a margin. Expect offers below melt for common bullion and junk silver, and possibly above melt for coins with collector demand.
