How often
At least every 10 years by law; recent sales were in 2019 and 2022.

Banks turn unclaimed box contents over to Commerce after five years. State law requires Commerce to auction them at least every 10 years, and owners or heirs can still claim the proceeds after a sale. The Sept 2022 sale ran online through Fahey Sales with 700+ items; the one before it was in 2019.
