Arizona unclaimed money and property: is it yours?

Where to search Arizona's official unclaimed property list for free, what happens to forgotten safe-deposit boxes there, and whether the money is still yours after a sale.

Safe-deposit boxes

Does Arizona auction unclaimed safe-deposit-box contents?

Yes. Arizona held or listed a state sale in 2025–26. ADOR auctions items from abandoned safe-deposit boxes once a year. The Feb 2026 sale ran online only at Sierra Auction Management, with one in-person viewing day in Phoenix. Proceeds go to a custodial account where owners can still claim them.

Not yet verified: A 2027 date hasn't been announced. February is a guess based on the 2026 sale.

How to check

How do I check Arizona for free?

  1. Open Arizona's official search: azdor.gov ↗. Check that the address is this one before you type anything in.
  2. Search your name, any past or maiden names, and any business you ran. If a relative has died, search their name too: heirs can often claim. Ask the state office what proof it needs.
  3. If you've lived or worked in other states, search those too. MissingMoney.com ↗, NAUPA's free site, searches most states at once and links back to each state's official claim page.
  4. File the claim on the official site and send the proof it asks for, such as ID. Each state sets its own rules.

Finders

Do I need to pay someone to claim it?

No. NAUPA, the national association of state unclaimed property administrators, says there's no fee to search for and claim your property if you use your state's official program. Paid finders are legal in most cases but never required. Some states cap their fees and many require them to register, so check with the state office before you sign a finder's contract. NAUPA ↗
